Moss & Associates Expecting A “Green” Year — Contractor Ramps Up To Serve Growing Demand For Sustainable Commercial Buildings

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, January 15, 2008

Throughout the commercial construction sector, Florida’s demand for energy efficient “green” projects will intensify in 2008, according to Bob Moss, president and CEO of Moss & Associates.
“Already, this long-term trend is beginning to reshape our region’s construction industry,” said Moss, whose Fort Lauderdale construction management firm has approximately $327 million in energy-efficient projects completed, under construction or in design throughout Florida. “While the public sector initially took the lead, now we’re seeing a dramatic increase in private sector demand as well.”

While many owners and developers are asking Moss to meet national Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria set by the U.S. Green Building Council, others are adding a host of environmentally friendly systems and features without seeking LEED certification, according to Mike Thompson, Moss & Associates vice president, preconstruction services.

“While budget issues impact those design and construction decisions, clearly more owners are seeking to incorporate a substantial number of ‘green’ features that appeal to their shareholders, tenants and buyers,” added Thompson. “Energy efficient materials and systems can also reduce operating expenses throughout a building’s lifecycle, helping to provide owners with a positive overall return on their investment.”

Moss is taking a proactive approach, investing heavily in LEED training for its supervisory and operational team. Seven Moss employees have already earned the rigorous AP designation offered by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Moss & Associates is continually investing in training programs in crucial areas such as project safety as well as “green” construction practices and systems. “As a company, we do more hours of training than most contractors throughout the nation,” said Kevin Denton, a senior project manager who earned his AP designation in 2003.

Current Moss projects being constructed to meet LEED-certification criteria throughout the state include:

  • Pompano Beach branch, Broward County Public Library
  • University of Miami Interdisciplinary Wet Lab Research Facility, in Miami, geared for Silver LEED Certification
  • U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services field offices in Miami, Kendall, Hialeah, Fort Lauderdale and Royal Palm Beach – all five buildings designed for Silver LEED Certification

Moss has also recently completed a number of energy-efficient “green” projects for Nova Southeastern University in Davie, including the $75 million University Center and the adjacent Performing Arts Center, plus the new $44 million The Commons at the Residence Hall and the Rosenthal Dining Hall.

Known for delivering complex, landmark projects for the private and public sectors, Moss & Associates provides construction management and design/build services throughout the United States, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. The firm had revenues of $607 million in 2007. Moss & Associates is based in Fort Lauderdale with regional offices in Miami and Ocala. For more information, visit www.mosscm.com.
