Moss & Associates Celebrates Topping Off Massive Downtown Dadeland Complex

Moss & Associates, one of Florida’s leading construction services companies, has topped off Downtown Dadeland, the seven-building residential and retail complex in the new urban heart of Kendall.
“This milestone reflects the efforts and commitment of our entire construction team as we move toward a March 2007 completion,” said Bob Moss, president of the Fort Lauderdale-based company, which is building the mixed-use project for developers Gulfside Development and the Canyon-Johnson Urban Fund.
Moss & Associates hosted a topping-off ceremony on July 25, celebrating completion of the highest structural point in the development. Following the industry tradition that originated in Scandinavia, a fir tree was lifted and positioned on the complex’s highest point.
Located on a 7.4-acre site at 7300 N. Kendall Drive, Downtown Dadeland’s new urbanist design provides convenient pedestrian access to the nearby Dadeland South Metrorail station and landmark Dadeland Mall. The 1.45 million-square-foot development includes 125,000 square feet of ground-level retail and restaurant space, 416 residential condominiums, and a two-story underground parking garage with space for 1,000 vehicles.
“This is one of the largest and most complex suburban developments in South Florida’s history,” said Moss & Associates Executive Vice President Joe Harris, who has kept a construction team of 600 on schedule and on-budget since being awarded the project in 2004.
When completed, Downtown Dadeland will include 130,000 cubic yards of concrete — enough to fill 73 football fields with concrete a foot deep — more than one-third of a mile of concrete bridge structures and 18 interior elevators.
Harris said the project’s toughest construction challenge to date was the two-story underground parking garage, which is built 14 feet below the area’s water table. He noted that this is one of the largest parking garages ever built below the water table in the Southeastern U.S.
