Palm Beach County Jail Expansion Program
Location: Belle Glade, Florida
Client: Palm Beach County Facilities and Operations
Architect: HOK Architects, STH Architectural Group
The Palm Beach County Jail Expansion is a multiple phase project spanning three separate sites. The project has an overall project budget of $267,000,000.
Site one was constructed adjacent to an occupied and operating county detention facility. The project is 1,000,000 SF and consists of the addition of a juvenile facility adjacent to an existing operating juvenile facility, renovation of community outreach and drug program facilities, fuel station for county vehicles, county bus maintenance facility, over 1,000 inmate beds, support facilities for the beds including food service, laundry, warehouse, inmate program rooms, classrooms, law enforcement offices, 911 call center, and court facilities.
To construct this work the 75 acre site had to have over 700,000 cubic yards of unsuitable material removed and replaced with engineered fill. This involved excavations as deep as 15 feet. These excavations had to be performed near occupied buildings, through active parking lots, and in front of critical facility access points. Our team had to coordinate heavily with the facilities command staff to prevent impact to their day to day operations. Turbidity barriers, silt fences, and other pollution run-off prevention techniques were constructed and maintained throughout the construction process.
The work on the second site consists of a Video Visitation Center for inmate and public visitation via Internet, completed in 2010, Housing for 850 inmates, support facilities for the inmates including food service, laundry, warehouse, classification, classrooms, and a new stand alone courthouse to service the central Palm Beach Community The total project value for this work is $94,000,000.
The work on the third site consists of renovations and expansions of the county’s third active detention facility. This work is budgeted at $47,200,000. This work is scheduled to begin once work on site two is complete.
